Fire Safety Month: Cooking Safety Tips for your Apartment Home

One of the simplest ways to stay safe is to be mindful while cooking. Cooking can be a wonderful outlet for relaxation, creativity, and socializing with friends and family, but did you know that unattended cooking is the #1 cause of household fires? By taking just a few extra precautions, you can help prevent fires from occurring and keep your home safe.

Here are some important tips for cooking safely in your apartment home:

Be Alert and Aware:

  • Avoid cooking when you’re tired or distracted.
  • Never leave your apartment with food on the stove or in the oven.
  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking or use a timer if you need to step away to remind yourself that something’s cooking.

Use Caution:

  • Keep flammable items like towels, oven mitts, and curtains away from the cooking area.
  • Be mindful of loose clothing near the stove.
  • Avoid storing items in your oven or broiler drawer.
  • Take extra care when frying, as grease and fats can easily catch fire.

Fire Safety Tips:

  • For small stove fires, turn off the burner and slide a lid over the pan. Keep it covered until cool.
  • If an oven fire starts, turn off the oven and keep the door closed.
  • Use an all-purpose fire extinguisher for small fires, but never throw water on grease or electrical fires.

When in Doubt – Get Out!

  • If a fire breaks out, leave your apartment immediately and close the door behind you.
  • If you can, alert your neighbors as you exit.
  • Call 9-1-1 from a safe location outside the building.
